The Heart of the Kingdom of Denmark

From Slotsmøllen and the Town Square, you hardly have time to settle into your cycling position before you should treat yourself to more stops. Among the many options is Nyborg Library – an architectural gem designed by some of Denmark's greatest architects, both inside and out. Borgmestergården – Nyborg's local history museum – as well as Nyborg Castle and the many other impressive buildings in Nyborg's historic city center truly make Nyborg the Heart of the Kingdom of Denmark. Although it's hard to leave, you'll return later on your tour, and can therefore safely continue your journey along the old railway to Svendborg. Follow the old railway line if you're on a mountain bike. For regular bikes, follow Gl. Vindingevej to Vindinge village and its historic church.

Sulkendrup Mill

Just south of Vindinge, you'll come across your first watermill, Sulkendrup Mill. This working mill is open to the public on certain days, offering visitors the chance to enjoy a coffee or ice cream. The mill is also home to a newly restored dolmen that you can explore. This is one of the most picturesque spots on the entire route.

Lille Mølle

Carved out by glaciers during the Ice Age, the Ørbæk river valley is the perfect setting for watermills. You won't have to cycle far to reach the next one – Lille Mølle, is a charming mill with its traditional waterwheel, half-timbered frame, and thatched roof reflected in the tranquil mill pond.

Refsvindinge og Ørbæk Brewery

Water is essential. Whether this is the reason why the region's local breweries are located in the area, we will leave unsaid, but nevertheless, you will find two really good breweries here. Refsvindinge Brewery is known by most for its Ale No 16, which has been voted Denmark's best beer several times. Ørbæk Brewery is organic and has also won awards for, among other things, Fynsk Forår. While they're a bit off the main route, we highly recommend visiting their farm shops. The smell of malt and hops and the clinking sound of bottles being filled on the bottling line is a unique experience.

Frørup, Svindinge and Glorup

Your journey continues through the charming villages of Frørup and Svindinge. In Frørup, you'll discover Regisse Spring, a well believed to have healing powers in medieval times. Nearby is Frørup Vineyard. Whether their wine has healing powers is far from certain. What is certain, however, is that you should explore the vineyard as it is definitely worth a visit. Your route then takes you past Glorup Manor, where the park is a must-see. H.C. Andersen was a frequent visitor and found inspiration for many of his fairy tales and poems here.

Kongshøj Mill

Kongshøj Mill is another stunning sight with its picturesque mill pond. Take a break at the small rest area and admire the view of the mill reflected in the water. The tranquil sound of the flowing water adds to the peaceful atmosphere. Originally part of Glorup Manor, this mill is a must-see. Before heading back to Nyborg, make a stop at St. Mads' Spring, a sacred well located at Kogsbølle near Holckenhavn Fjord. Like Regisse Spring, pilgrims once traveled here seeking healing. As you approach Nyborg, you'll pass Holckenhavn Castle, where you can explore the beautiful park.

Dyrehave Mill

Approaching Nyborg from the south, you'll drive down Dyrehavevej, a road that cuts through the ancient deer park dating back to the Middle Ages, when the Danish king resided in Nyborg Castle. Here also lies Dyrehave Mill, which is one of Denmark's tallest mills of its kind at 25 meters and 7 floors. The mill was recently restored and reopened for visitors in 2021, where it once again is able to grind grain with wind power. Kongens Fadebur - a network of local food producers - operates a shop from here and organizes activities.

Nyborg Distillery

Perhaps angels sing over Nyborg. Or maybe it's the exceptional water that has brought healing and life for centuries. One thing is certain: Nyborg Distillery, located on the Nyborg harbor, produces outstanding whisky, gin, and brandy, or Aqua Vitae if you prefer. The word "whisky" originates from the Celtic "uisce beatha", which means Aqua Vitae or "water of life", and as is well known, there is always an "Angel's share" when whisky is stored and over time transforms water into this life-giving spirit. End your bike tour with a taste of this remarkable beverage.
