Stream of Ancient Knowledge - Exhibition by Jonas Pihl
The title of the exhibition is “Stream Of Ancient Knowledge”. It is a word play on the place name Videbæk's association with “a stream of knowledge”, the wit - the flexible - and the expanse, the wide embrace and interweaving of seemingly opposing systems into a whole in the images. An archaic knowledge that reaches into the future.
For this exhibition in Vestjyllands Kunstpavillon, Jonas Pihl has been preoccupied with the etymology of the word 'Videbæk'. The place name comes from vidjebæk - a stream of water with willows around it. Willows are flexible branches that are used to make willow wicker, among other things. This is why willow branches appear in the paintings, which, in addition to the local anchoring, becomes a concretization in the paintings of his own preoccupation with the concept of pliability as such. At the same time, one of the ideas behind these new works has been to make these structures form a network - both conceptually and visually. The V in Videbæk's landmark, which also inspired Henning Larsen for the building's window shapes, has inspired Pihl to create inverted V's in the form of triangles protruding from the streams of water that also feature in the paintings.
In his paintings, artist Jonas Pihl works with visualizations of pliability in broad terms, such as the pliability of spacetime structure - and in more intimate terms, such as the pliability of social structures and diversity systems.
