Cycling in Tisvilde Hegn: Where nature meets history

Tisvilde Hegn is ideal for a bike ride. With its sacred springs, sand drift history, and Troll Forest, Tisvilde Hegn is a great place to combine exercise, nature, and history.

Tisvilde Hegn is Denmark's fifth largest forest, stretching from Tisvildeleje along the coast to Asserbo plantation. Tisvilde Hegn is a popular excursion destination, offering cycling, riding, and hiking trails.

The area around Tisvilde Hegn is characterized by the sand drift that ravaged the land in the 16th century. To prevent further drifting, the local population planted the forest we know today in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The soil varies greatly, with drifting sand reaching up to 20 meters in some places. Botanically, the forest boasts a valuable herb flora, especially the orchid 'Knærod', and is rich in national insect rarities, particularly beetles and butterflies. The plantation area has a large and varied bird population.

The area lies directly on the Kattegat Sea, with an 8 km long coastline. It is home to several 'sacred' springs, the Troll Forest, and the sand-buried village.

There are also traces of Stone Age humans in the form of several burial mounds and stone dolmens.
